Arnaud Fontanet
 | Bio: | Head of the Epidemiology of Emerging Diseases Unit, and Co-director of the Pasteur-CNAM School of Public Health.
Arnaud Fontanet, born in 1961 in Paris, is a medical epidemiologist specialized in infectious diseases epidemiology. He is a Professor - Health and Development Chair - at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM) and serves as the co-Director of the “Pasteur-CNAM School of Public Health”. He also heads the Emerging Diseases Epidemiology Unit at the Institut Pasteur in Paris.
Arnaud Fontanet received his MD and Diplôme d’Études Spécialisées (DES) with a major in rheumatology from the University of Paris V in 1990. He obtained his Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1993 and his HDR (ability to conduct research) from the University of Paris VI in 2000.
After working as a medical epidemiologist at the WHO on HIV-AIDS, and spending five years in Ethiopia as Project Manager for the Ethio-Netherlands AIDS Research Project (ENARP), Arnaud Fontanet joined the Institut Pasteur in Paris in 2002 and started the Emerging Diseases Epidemiology unit. He is the North coordinator of the ANRS Research Site on Viral Hepatitis in Egypt, and is/was scientific coordinator of several national and European-funded research projects, e.g. AVE, investigating new viruses causing acute encephalitis in children in Northern Vietnam, EXTRA-MU looking at the transmission of Buruli ulcer in Cameroon, EPISARS, searching for the animal reservoir of the SARS coronavirus, etc.
Arnaud Fontanet has served as a Member of several Scientific Councils (Institut Pasteur, Institut de Veille Sanitaire, IMEA, “Population and Public Health” Panel of the Wellcome Trust). He was Member of the Editorial Board of the journal AIDS (2002-2008) and Associate-Editor of the European Journal of Epidemiology (2003-2006). He is a Reviewer for the Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, Hepatology, Clinical Infectious Diseases, AIDS.
